Nature Hikes for East Bay Dogs

Hi there! I’m Jules, owner of Redwoods and Waves. I take dogs on hikes to the Oakland redwoods, to the bayfront for ocean breeze and views, and occasionally to a shaded canyon. I use positive reinforcement and offer door-to-door pickup. I ensure your pup comes home happily tired, giving you peace of mind during the busy work week.

Adventures

Service Area: At this time, I cannot serve West Oakland or Downtown Oakland. I am currently serving Central, North, and East Oakland (examples: Lake Merritt, Glenview, Bella Vista, Temescal, Rockridge, Piedmont, Oakmore, Montclair, Oakland Hills), and surrounding Berkeley neighborhoods (Claremont, Elmwood, Ocean View, South Berkeley).

Small-Pack Hike, $55 per adventure

Best for socialization and structure.

  • Intentionally capped at 3 dogs for safety, individual attention, calm, and park compliance.

  • Access to exclusive redwood trails most walkers can't utilize due to the sheer number of dogs.

1:1 Solo Hike, $80 per adventure

Best for individual attention, sensitive pups, or ongoing training.

  • Tailored to your dog's specific pacing and needs.

  • These walks can be for 1:1 attention and exercise, or training and positive reinforcement on the trail, such as loose leash manners or practicing calm sits around passing dogs and hikers to help your dog stay relaxed and build confidence over time.

Adventures Include:

  • 1 Hour on the Trails: Focused on quiet forest paths with plenty of mental stimulation.

  • 10-min Post-Hike Healthy Snack Break: A healthy-ingredient snack with plenty of water.

  • Door-to-Door Service: Seamless pickup and drop-off with real-time text updates, including where we are going for the day.

  • Daily Photo/Video Updates: See exactly how much fun your pup is having!

  • Treat Training: Used to downregulate nervous energy and maintain good trail etiquette using positive reinforcement.

Trail FAQs & Policies

  • Leash Policy: Dogs are mostly on-leash. Off-leash time depends entirely on rapport, recall, and handler discretion.

  • Recommended Frequency: To build a strong routine, good manners, and a solid bond, I highly recommend at least two hikes per week, but dogs will still benefit from a once-a-week “hike treat.”

Hi, I'm Jules, founder of Redwoods & Waves.

My dedication to dogs started in childhood, as I cared for high-energy herding breeds like German Shepherds, as well as adventurous poodle mixes, and spent summers in Sisters, Oregon with my uncle's rescued wolf-Malamute hybrids. My uncle taught me the importance of daily exercise for dogs, including hour-long forest hikes. As a result, the dogs were calm, happy, and rarely had behavioral issues.

I realized later through research that in addition to the exercise, hour-long forest hikes provided more complicated smells than the city or suburbs alone, which boosted the dogs’ mental stimulation and tired them out. So after years of taking my own pups on adventures and caring for friends’ dogs, I decided to turn my passion into a business. I also drive a hybrid Subaru to reduce my environmental impact

Professionally, I come from a counseling and sociology background, and won an award for my sociological research. This experience directly informs how I research and analyze dog behavior. Over the years, I've worked with professional dog trainers to learn industry best practices, including reward-based training. I stay attentive to each pup's needs and understand the importance of praise and positive reinforcement.

Also, a quick note for safety: my car magnets with my business name and website were stolen, and a police report was made. Please note I am only doing business as myself pictured here, in the car you see on this website. No one works for me, and there is no other car affiliated with this business. Feel free to reach out to my email if you find anything suspicious. Thank you!

Redwoods and Waves Dog Hikes

All dogs should be mostly friendly to a new handler, have no biting, snapping, or food-guarding history, and settle after a few hello barks at pick-up. For sensitive, anxious, or dog-selective pups without biting or food-guarding history, I suggest 1:1 hikes.

I use positive reinforcement methods, so I do not accept dogs using e-collars or aversive equipment. A properly fitted harness is all that’s needed. Must be neutered/spayed.

The more I know about your pup, the better the walks will go.

If you think your dog is a good fit, please fill out the form below to schedule a meet-and-greet. I will reach out ASAP.

Thank you!
